More About Bernard (Bernie)

Bernard (Bernie) was abandoned at a campsite and a concerned family brought him to one of our partner shelters in South Carolina after his owners could not be found. He was held for an additional time at the shelter and still his owners did not come for him so we quickly made arrangements for him to come to Vermont so we could find him the family he deserves.

Bernie quickly bonds with his people and easily integrated into a foster home with other dogs and cats. He is easy-going, listens well, a good leash walker, loves to snuggle, medium energy, would enjoy a family that would include him on all their adventures as he is a super fun dog to take on outings… long walks, off leash hiking, wading in the water, picnics, ending with couch naps and cuddles. Bernie is also quite the smart boy, quick to learn commands through positive reinforcement and fun games.

Like many smart dogs, he does have a bit of a stubborn streak, but patience, treats, and squeaky toys win every time! While Bernie is friendly to all and appropriately engages with folks out on adventures, we have learned that he would prefer a quieter home, one with a calm and experienced person who would manage him around occasional visitors as he feels responsible for protecting his home and his people inside the house. When Bernie is feeling stressed around visitors to his home, moving him to a safe space like his crate (which he loves) or a gated room helps him to feel more relaxed while you visit with guests. He really enjoys visits to the dog park and would love to share a home with another confident, playful dog(s). American Bulldog/Lab mix, 65 lbs, 1-2 years old.
