Bernard (Bernie) was abandoned at a campsite and a concerned family brought him to one of our partner shelters in South Carolina after his owners could not be found. He was held for an additional time at the shelter and still his owners did not come for him so we quickly made arrangements for him to come to Vermont so we could find him the family he deserves.

Bernie quickly bonds with his people and easily integrated into a foster home with other dogs and cats. He is easy-going, listens well, a good leash walker, loves to snuggle in bed, medium energy, would enjoy a family that would include him on all their adventures as he is a super fun dog to take on outings… long walks, enjoys off leash hiking, loves to swim, the dog park, ending with couch naps and cuddles. Bernie is also quite the smart boy, quick to learn commands through positive reinforcement and fun games. After completing Level 1 Life Skills training class, he is currently building on some great skills in his Level 2 class.

Like many smart dogs, he does have a bit of a stubborn streak (like when it's time to leave the dog park!), but patience, treats, and squeaky toys win every time! While Bernie is friendly to all and appropriately engages with folks out on adventures, he is brushing up on his skills with greeting strangers into the home. Instead of rushing the door and barking at visitors, we are rewarding him for calmer greetings and teaching him that he is not responsible for protecting his home and his people. He would do best in a quieter home with a family who will continue the same management plan with visitors/strangers to the home. Bernie would love to share a home with another confident, playful dog(s) and even cats. American Bulldog/Lab mix, 65 lbs, 1-2 years old.
